In which my mind goes 'off piste'...

First came the 'Firenado.' Now we have 'Thundersnow' and 'Frostquakes'?

WTH? Sounds more like characters in an 'X-Men' film than weather!

*commence Hovis music* Back when I were a lass, we had proper weather terminology. Eee, them were the days! And we had proper weather presenters too. Smart young men who wore plaid shirts with kipper ties, some of 'em sporting a rakish hint of facial fuzz on their upper lips. Ah! Simple times. Happier days.

[For some reason, I seem to be channeling the spirit of a Yorkshire grandmother. No idea why. I just can't seem to stop myself!] :)

Eee! I remember when the weather forecast consisted of nothing more than Michael Fish pushing marshmallow cloud stickers around his magnetic board. Such a lovely lad(!). A true pioneer of the weather channel. He lived his life on the edge, see? Just him, a camera man, and a handful of magnetic symbols. Alright, sometimes those magnets fell off the map, but did he care? No! He was a professional. He thumped 'em back in place and carried on talking.

One thing's for sure, Michael Fish and the boys didn't have a symbol for Thunderquakesnow - or whatever it is they're calling it these days.

My Heart's in the Highlands...

What's Burns Night without a wee dram and a verse or two? *clears throat*

"My Heart's In The Highlands

My heart's in the Highlands, my heart is not here,
My heart's in the Highlands, a-chasing the deer;
Chasing the wild-deer, and following the roe,
My heart's in the Highlands, wherever I go.

Farewell to the Highlands, farewell to the North,
The birth-place of Valour, the country of Worth ;
Wherever I wander, wherever I rove,
The hills of the Highlands for ever I love.

Farewell to the mountains, high-cover'd with snow,
Farewell to the straths and green vallies below;
Farewell to the forests and wild-hanging woods,
Farewell to the torrents and loud-pouring floods.

My heart's in the Highlands, my heart is not here,
My heart's in the Highlands, a-chasing the deer;
Chasing the wild-deer, and following the roe,
My heart's in the Highlands, wherever I go."

Robert Burns.
